Science – Subject Content KS3

Year 7
In Year 7, the focus is on introducing students to core concepts that they may have encountered in at Primary School, but now in much greater depth. Students will develop their skills of independent investigation by independently planning valid investigations that produce repeatable data. Amongst the more challenging areas is understanding that scientific data always has a level of uncertainty which can make hard and fast conclusions difficult. These skills & techniques would be recognised by professional scientists in the ‘real world’. By doing this, we aim to build student independence and conceptual understanding of content, to help give them a flying start to the more challenging modern Science GCSEs.

The topics in Year 7 are:
1.Cells
2.Particles
3.Energy
4.Interdependence
5.Forces

Year 8
In Year 8, we aim to advance students’ knowledge of the core concepts introduced in Year 7 and to enhance their literacy and numeracy capabilities in Science. It is especially critical for our students to develop the ability to independently construct complex arguments and explanations for issues affecting science and society, and to learn how to process data effectively, since these skills are now demanded in both GCSE exams and for the coursework tasks. As such, we feel at Testwood that embedding these skills as part of a formative exploration of relevant scientific topics is a priority for us in Year 8 and we therefore maintain an insistence that students apply their literacy and numeracy skills at every opportunity.

The topics in Year 8 are:
1.Variation and Behaviour
2.Space
3.Chemical Reactions
4.Geology
5.Electricity
6.Human Body

Year 9
In Year 9, students complete the ‘5-7 Project’ which is a course of exciting lessons which aim to build student knowledge and skill through investigation. The intention of the scheme is to raise as many students as possible to working at a Level 7 which is particularly advantageous as they commence GCSEs in April.

The topics for Year 9 September-April are:
1.Cells
2.Forces
3.Particles
4.Energy
5.Light
6.Microbes
7.Rocks
8.Transport in Living Organisms
9.Animal Behaviour
10.Ecology
11.Electromagnetism
