Easter Letter from the Headteacher

Our Ref:  JP/JBa

01 April 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am writing at the end of a hugely successful but incredibly busy term.  It has been packed with option choices for Year 9.   The Testwood Sports College Review showcases the events which have happened and I encourage you to have a good read!

When we return from the Easter break, the GCSE exams will soon be upon us.  The main written papers start from Monday 11th May and continue after the Whitsun half term.  Year 11 continue to impress. We are  expecting good results, but there is still a lot of work to do.  Revision and catch-up sessions are taking place each evening after school for Year 11, which are already being very well attended.  There are also Easter and Whitsun revision schools on offer and a list of these are included with this letter.

We have recently been visited by Ofsted and the favourable report will be published on our website as soon as it is available.  It confirms that reasonable progress is still being made. We will receive another monitoring visit from Ofsted during the summer term and we will be able to show that we continue to raise standards for the students.  I encourage you to visit the Ofsted website and complete the parent survey so that your comments can contribute to the rapid improvement which has been secured. Once you have registered, the survey takes about five minutes and would help enormously in our drive to get back to ‘Good’.  The website can be found at https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/register  If you have any issues you would like to discuss with myself or the senior team personally, please do not hesitate to get in touch via email or by phone.

Our focus after the Easter break will be very much on students’ progress in lessons and that they consistently produce their best work.   We are working towards them bringing all of their exercise books home so that you can see their work.   Please take a regular look at their work books which they need to bring to school every day along with their planner and school equipment.

We continue to focus on uniform and behaviour.  We would ask parents to support us by ensuring that your child is dressed appropriately for school.  In simple terms, this means no trainers or pumps. May I remind parents that blazers are to be worn every day and ties need to be six stripes long.  Students need a sturdy school bag so that they can carry everything for the day ahead.  Some of our girls have grown taller and their skirts may now need to be replaced with a longer one.    I am very pleased overall with the quality of uniform and thank you once again for supporting the school.  However, occasional lapses with uniform, footwear and nail varnish continue to be a concern.

Mrs Jenkins has a request for donations of material.  We are joining the national initiative “Every girl deserves a pretty dress.”  Anyone with dress material which would be suitable should donate it to her after Easter.  Let’s see how many pretty dresses we can make.

I am very pleased to inform parents that two new Deputy Headteachers will be joining Testwood after Easter.  Mr Fenton and Mrs Kennedy will be responsible for pastoral and curriculum issues respectively and they will feature in the next copy of the Testwood Sports Review when they will be interviewed by students.  Mr Byrne will also be joining us after Easter as Head of Performing Arts and will be writing to budding musicians to encourage them to join choirs, ensembles and an orchestra early in the summer term.  We look forward to inviting you to their first summer concert.

We wish Mr Johnston, Mr Swettenham and Mrs Vaissieres-Brien well in their new ventures as they leave us at the end of this term.
